The real Fractal Design logo has color paint strokes inside it. The Fractal Design logo has changed, meanwhile, to the "Big FD" as we called it. The design of the splash screen is heavily influenced by the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, which features the same color scheme and gold press. Note also the trademark on Natural-Media. Bob did work on the watercolor brush technology. Also, note the inclusion of John Derry and Bob Lansdon as authors of Painter. John had a much more literal approach to splash screen design, as you can see.
Painter 2.0 saw the influence of John Derry. The brush icons were a bit inconsistent, and featured gigantic images. Note the color picker was a triangle, but with a hue slider at the bottom. Finally, a correction window was more a modal approach to the brightness and contrast of the image. For selections in Painter (called Friskets in early versions) there was the frisket palette and the fill palette, which also helped control the paint bucket. For controlling brushes behavior, there are the brush size, brush behavior, and expression palettes. A palette each for tools, brushes, colors, and papers. Painter is now wholly owned and marketed by Corel.The Painter 1.2 user interface shows the very start of our UI. Metacreations sold off all their creative interests and Painter was acquired by Corel Corporation where it was temporarily rebranded "Procreate" Painter during its transition into the Corel Suite of graphic applications. Derry had gained previous paint software expertise at Time Arts, a developer of the early desktop-based paint applications Lumena and Oasis. Fractal Design later merged with RayDream, then with MetaTools to become MetaCreations. John Derry joined Zimmer and Hedges during the release cycle of Painter 1.2.
Zimmer and Hedges had previously developed ImageStudio and ColorStudio, both image-editing applications, for Letraset. Painter was initially developed for the Macintosh system by Mark Zimmer and Tom Hedges, founders of the Fractal Design Corporation. It is intended to be used in real-time by professional digital artists as a functional creative tool. Corel Painter is a raster-based digital art application created to simulate as accurately as possible the appearance and behavior of traditional media associated with drawing, painting, and printmaking.
